There are two Youth Activity Centers (YAC)-one in Los Alamos on the east side of Ashley Pond and one in White Rock located behind the White Rock Library on Sherwood Blvd. The programming focus of the Activity Centers is on youth resiliency, a safe, supervised environment and positive adult role models. Bailey Martinez and Marie Vigil are the Site Directors of the YACs. The program provides supervised programs at no cost for youth in grades 3-8. Last year there were over 12,000 visits. The YAC is open every day after school, during school vacations, and during the summer. The YAC exists to provide a safe environment and to develop resiliency in youth.
The Activity Center focus is on grades 3-8. Sixth grade students are invited to a transition event in the spring which is supervised by staff and parent volunteers. In the summer, field trips include fishing, climbing the wall at the YMCA, Bandelier National Monument, hikes around Los Alamos, etc.
